WW1 Postcards: some images

The Design Brief

Design a picture post card with a message to or from a soldier who has just left home to serve in WW1.

The soldier may be a relative or family friend. You may wish to give the soldier a keepsake of sketched images from home. You may wish to design your picture postcard to give the soldier a reminder of home in the Batley-Birstall area or an image of something new from home. Your design for the picture postcard may be from the soldier who completed his training and sent to the front. This may his first postcard home.

Initial Images

The following are some of the images being developed for the overall presentation.

Thank you all for your help.

May Competition

The 2014 May Competition subject was 'Drink.'

Pat's entry was voted the winner.

Say what you see.

The discussions were revealing and judging was intense. A single vote could make the difference.

Pat's entry won by a landslide. But, she counted the votes. We all have great trust in Pat's sense of fair play. (Pat got my vote).

Below are the rest of the entries:

Pat will choose the topic for next year's May Competition.

Sea Salt

Tuesday, 27 May 14, Terry had spent a day gardening and needed a rest. Barry moved over into Terry's usual place at the head of the table. Barry put on pirate's gear for a laugh.

"Ooo, Argh, Barry Lad...."

We all had a good laugh. Thank you, Barry.

Ann Allen Oriental Art Workshop and Demonstration, 10AM- 4PM, Tuesday, 13 May 2014

Ann Allen conducted an oriental art work shop for the Group. She gave the group an introduction to Chinese painting and showed examples of the different styles of painting. During the day, Ann gave demonstrations of her painting range. Ann shared examples of her work showing the materials and techniques used.

The group enjoyed the day. We all went home with our first Chinese painting of a tiger.

We would like to thank Ann Allen for her energy and patience with the group.

Sketching Workshop: 1st Tuesday May

As part of our sketching workshops, we can do a group topic. This week we can prepare a sketch image as part of our pocket and postcard sketch series. The first workshop will concentrate on your imagination and help you develop an image that may very personal. Then we will develop the image into a finished sketch at the next workshop and prepare an initial display for presentation.

Introduction

The Librarian at the Batley Library contacted John to suggest that we could present some images of WW1 at the Library. John volunteered me to help. Our intention is to display picture post cards of the Oakwell Art Group at the Batley Library in memory of the start of World War 1 from August.

We have discussed this and the initial preparations are underway. We have bought a frame, poster size, for the picture post cards. When you submit the picture postcards at the June workshop, the display will be finalised.

The Topic

Design a picture post card with a message to or from a soldier that has just left home to serve in the War.

And, finally

We would like to put the images on our Blog. The library would like to use some of the images for their publicity.

We would like to thank everyone for their help and participation.
